ISM Recognized as a Unified Champion School by Special Olympics Pilipinas

08 May 2026

On May 5, 2026, International School Manila was recognized as a 2026 Unified Champion School by Special Olympics Pilipinas, honoring the School’s ongoing commitment to building a more inclusive community for all learners.

As shared by Special Olympics Pilipinas Unified Champion Schools Project Manager Ezra Balingit, the Unified Champion School banner is awarded to “schools that actively promote inclusion through unified sports, inclusive youth leadership, and whole-school engagement.”

Presented during a simple ceremony at the High School Courtyard, the awarding ceremony brought together students, faculty, parents, administrators, representatives from Special Olympics Pilipinas, and longtime advocates of the program to celebrate a partnership that has steadily grown over the years into what is now a deeply embedded part of the ISM community.

Angela Respecki, adviser of the Inclusion Revolution Club (IRC), shared how the partnership first began through smaller collaborations within individual divisions before expanding into a broader, schoolwide effort involving Elementary, Middle, and High School. Over time, initiatives such as the Neurodivergent Art Exhibit, Saturday Service activities, the Aquathlon, and other student-led programs helped shape a culture where inclusion is practiced consistently across campus.

“This recognition is truly a result of a whole-school effort,” Angela said. “This banner for us represents more than achievement—it represents a commitment in creating a space where everyone belongs.”.

The team from Special Olympics Pilipinas also shared the impact of ISM’s efforts and the atmosphere of inclusion they experienced on campus. “I can truly feel what inclusion means here at ISM,” shared Coach Kamille, athlete-leader at Special Olympics Pilipinas. “ISM feels safe, supportive, and like home.”

Student leadership has also played a central role in fostering inclusion at ISM. Sofia, current President of the Inclusion Revolution Club, shared how meaningful it has been to help create a more inclusive community at ISM. “Inclusion isn’t just something I talk about, and something I care deeply about – I do this because I want to help create spaces where everyone feels accepted and feels valued.” As Coach Kamille put it, “The students are the reason inclusion is very much alive here on campus.”

Wilma Santos Huang, Special Olympics Pilipinas’ volunteer ambassador, also recognized the culture being built within the ISM community, sharing that “ISM is truly leading the way in fostering an environment where acceptance, friendship, and meaningful participation are part of daily school life.”

The ceremony served not only as a recognition of past efforts, but also as a reminder of the role schools play in creating environments where every child is celebrated, supported, and given the opportunities to learn, grow, and belong. Congratulations to every teacher, student, parent, employee, advocate, and volunteer who has journeyed with us towards a more inclusive community!
