A Pawsitive Presence: Meet Marimar, ISM’s Therapy Dog

04 June 2025

International School Manila (ISM) recently welcomed a new campus companion, one with soft fur, gentle eyes, and a calming presence that brings warmth wherever she goes. Meet Marimar, ISM’s very own therapy dog, offering comfort and a little extra love to anyone who needs it.

Student-Led Initiatives to Schoolwide Impact
It all started with a proposal from a Middle School student committee. Passionate about well-being and mental health, they believed an on-campus therapy dog could make a difference in students’ lives. After thoughtful discussions and extensive research, the idea came to life.

Owned and cared for by Middle School Assistant Principal Amanda Pekin, Marimar is more than qualified for her new role. As a certified therapy dog under the Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) Doctor Dog Program, she has passed extensive temperament tests and training. Amanda herself also completed the Communitails Animal-Assisted Interventions Training Course, ensuring that she and Marimar are well-equipped for their responsibilities ahead.

In November 2024, Marimar officially began her duties as a certified Dr. Dog.

Beyond ISM, Marimar is also part of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Angel Pets Program, which promotes animal-aided therapy in residential care facilities. In a way, Marimar embodies the same value of service we uphold as a school community, extending care and comfort to those who need it most, not just on campus, but in the wider community.

Making a Difference, One Tail Wag at a Time

Therapy dogs are trained to provide affection and emotional support. With her calm demeanor, Marimar is perfectly suited for the job, unfazed by unfamiliar situations and comfortable being handled by many different people. Her presence has already made a meaningful impact, as her friendly face becomes a reminder for students to slow down, breathe, and be present.

Beyond stress relief, having Marimar on campus also helps teach students about responsibility and empathy. She’s a fun and engaging way for students to learn how to behave around animals, care for living beings, and respect shared spaces.

Whether it’s sitting quietly beside students, joining a class reading circle, or simply offering a wag in the hallway, Marimar does important work by providing comfort without saying a word. As ISM continues to explore creative ways to support student well-being, one thing’s for sure, Marimar has become a truly pawsitive presence in our Bearcat community.
