Tami Monsod '80 is not just an accomplished alumna but also one of our beloved ISM faculty. Having taught HS Drama since the 90's, she has been instrumental in many theatrical productions. In Nomine Matris (In the Name of the Mother) is her latest foray. Having won accolades and critical acclaim during its premiere in last year's Metro Manila Film Festival, the independent film is now on its second run.

Catch it in SM Cinemas (movie schedule found here), Robinson's Galeria, Metropolis Alabang, and Metroeast malls until May 14th. It is showing in Cebu and Davao as well. 


In Nomine Matris follows the story of "Mara, a young dance protege who seeks to land the principal part of a dance company about to embark on a tour.  On her quest to land the coveted break, a series of events turned her sense of meaning upside down, and is faced with a life changing decision.  She turns to her mentor and her mother as she searches for answers in the beautifully loud and endless moving world she lives in."

Steps Dance Studio is holding its annual Scholarship Auditions on March 10, 2013 (Sun). Full and partial scholarships to their summer dance workshops are available.

The Philippine Horticultural Society, Inc. (PHSI) will showcase various landscape and flower displays as well as hold horticultural talks at the Quezon Memorial Circle from February 1-6, 2013. The fair will be inaugurated by former Philippine First Lady (and long-time ISM community member) Ameling "Ming" Ramos.

]]> Wed, 30 Jan 2013 05:50:24 -0000 <![CDATA[Oshin Edralin '09: Documentary on Garbage Pickers]]> http://www.ismanila.org/page.cfm?p=845&newsid=3 http://www.ismanila.org/page.cfm?p=845&newsid=3 Oshin Edralin '09 was enrolled in the IB Film program at ISM, and recently entered a documentary in a film competition. Oshin puts the spotlight on an often-overlooked issue in the Philippines. Like a chicken that scratches the ground to find or eat a grain of rice, "isang kahig isang tuka" is a Filipino idiom for people who toil a day, in order to eat that day. This documentary is about women garbage pickers in the Philippines: women who are either too malnourished, uneducated or poor to be able to lift themselves up towards economic independence. Generation after generation face poverty because picking garbage does not sustain them and their families. Crime, prostitution and vagrancy are thus inevitable, and sometimes even used as a ticket out of hunger.
