English-as-a-Second-Language (ESL) Program

The International School Manila provides an ESL program for students whose first language is not English and whose English language skills limit full access to the regular grade level curriculum.

The ESL program enables students:

to acquire communicative and academic English skills needed to function successfully in the regular class program.
to learn English through active engagement in meaningful experiences.
to follow a course of study that integrates reading, writing, listening and speaking.
to participate with their classroom peers in a supportive environment.

The ESL and classroom teachers work together to create a language-rich environment where students feel comfortable taking risks and where individual needs are accommodated. Students are continually assessed by both teachers and moved into the regular class as they demonstrate readiness.

The ESL program provides:

A team approach, involving joint planning with the Grade level teacher.
A flexible and responsive program to suit individual needs and reflecting the mainstream language curriculum.
Small pull-out classes where teaching focuses on the development of language skills.
Inclusion lessons which are collaboratively taught by the ESL and Mainstream teachers.

Bilingualism

At ISM, we recognize the importance of maintaining and developing literacy skills in a student’s first language. Research has shown that children with well-developed literacy in their first language are able to transfer those skills to the second and subsequent languages. ESL Guidelines
International School Manila provides an inclusive English as a Second Language (ESL) Program to students whose first language is other than English and whose English language competency falls below grade level. Classroom teachers work together with mainstream teachers to create a language-rich environment where students feel comfortable taking risks and where individual needs are accommodated. The ESL teacher supports the ESL student within his or her mainstream classroom for lessons delivered to the whole class. The Inclusion model is a team approach involving joint planning with grade level teachers.
