Academic Program

The Elementary School Structure

The Elementary School comprises seven year levels: Preschool (covering two years), Kindergarten and Grades 1 to 4. The age range of our students is from three to ten years.

Each grade level is made up of a team of class teachers, teaching assistants, Learning Support and English-as-a-Second-Language (ESL) teachers. The Program Leader facilitates and guides the team at each grade level. The Program Leader in Preschool and Kindergarten teaches a class, while the Program Leaders in Grades 1 to 4 are specialist ESL teachers. Program Leaders also have considerable curricular, pastoral and administrative responsibilities. Each Program Leader also works as part of a team, which includes the Principal and Assistant Principal, on matters relating to their respective grade levels and curriculum.

Specialist teachers work with the students in Music, Physical Education (PE), Art, Research Skills and Information Technology. For those students for whom English is an additional language and need extra help, this will be provided by qualified ESL teachers. Students who need additional learning support are assisted by our Learning Support program. We also have additional reading support provided in the Kindergarten, Grade 1, Grade 2 and Grade 3 levels.

At International School Manila, we provide a happy and caring environment in which students are challenged and able to take an active role in their own learning. We provide an education based on current best practices and educational research that build on what students know and understand. We strive to meet students’ individual needs and recognize that each of our students is a unique person with a distinct set of values, passions, experiences and ideas. We want our students to communicate, question, inquire, be independent, be risk-takers, creative thinkers, and of course, to be responsible and caring people.

In the Elementary School we use an integrated inquiry approach as our curricular framework. Through our program of inquiry, students develop the skills, understandings and dispositions to be life-long learners.
